Geoff,

I’m listening to 100 Million Motherfuckers and have become very curious about the recorded guitars. Amps sound like amps, and there is only so much coloration “distortion” can make from one amp to another. But on this recording the gtr's sound more encapsulated and multi-toned in nature.

You’re obviously very skilled at recording and engineering. Are you able to toss a bone to a recording weekend-warrior on how to strive for that encapsulated / multi-toned sound ?

Thx

Hi thanks for writing.

It's a combination of a few things. The guitar is tuned to an open B chord so it's quite low. Tracked L-R with super fuzzy sansamp plug-in tone, one centered almost clean guitar with lots of lows and lots of compression (old Ampeg Reverberocket with SM7 mic), and then layered with an analog, square-wave synth tone all playing exactly the same part.

Happy recording!

G
